          英語四級閱讀理解練習題 1

Questions 61-65 are based on the following passage.

In thisage of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortageof mindless activities to keepa child occupied. Yet, despite the competition,my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure timewriting shortstories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competitionshe won last year.

As awriter I know about winning contest, and about losing them. I know what it islike to work hard on astory only to receive a rejection slip from thepublisher. I also know the pressures of trying to live up to a reputationcreatedby previous victories. What if she doesnt win the contest again? Thats thestrange thing about being aparent. So many of our own past scars and dashedhopes can surface.

Arevelation (啟示)came last week when I asked her, "Dont you want to win again?" "No," she replied, "I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade."

I hadjust spent weeks correcting her stores as she spontaneously( 自由地)told them. Telling myself that Iwas merely an experienced writerguiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions forcharacters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angelstarting first grade was quickly "guided" by meinto the tale of alittle girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turnedher contest into mycontest without even realizing it.

Stayingback and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I knowvery little about farmanimals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, Ihad to accept the fact that I was coopting (借用)mydaughtersexperience.

Whilestepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that Iwill quickly follow with moresteps, putting myself far enough away to give herroom but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will bereminding myselfthat children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.

          英語四級閱讀理解練習題 2

They are among the 250,000 people under the age of 25 who are out of work in the Netherlands, a group that accounts for 40 percent of the nation’s unemployed. A storm of anger boils up at the government-sponsored(政府資助的) youth center, even among those who are continuing their studies.

“We study for jobs that don’t exist.” Nicollete Steggerda, 23, said.

After three decades of prosperity, unemployment among 10 member nations of the European Community has exceeded 11 percent, affecting a total of 12.3 million people, and the number is climbing.

The bitter disappointment long expressed by British youths is spreading across the Continent. The title of a rock song “No Future” can now be seen written on the brick walls of closed factories in Belgium and France.

Recent surveys have found that the increasing argument in the last few years over the deployment(布局) in Europe of North Atlantic Treaty Organization missiles and the possibility of nuclear war have clouded European youths’ confidence in the future.

One form of protest tends to put the responsibility for a country’s economic troubles on the large numbers of “guest workers” from Third World nations, people welcomed in Western Europe in the years of prosperity.

Young Europeans, brought up in an extended period of economic success and general stability, seem to resemble Americans more than they do their own parents. Material enjoyment has given them a sense of expectation, each the right, to a standard of living that they see around them.

“And so we pass the days at the discos, or meet people at the café, and sit and stare.” Said Isabella Gcuit. “There is usually not much conversation. You look for happiness. Sometimes you even find it.”

1.Unemployment in the Netherlands has affected ____.

          A)one million people

          B)approximately 12.3 million of people

          C)250,000 people

          D)roughly 0.6 million people

          2.What Nicollete Steggerda said(Para.2) suggests that ____.

          A)school education is not sufficient

B)the students’ aim in study is not clear

C)the students can’t get work after graduation

D)the students lose their motivation in their study

          3.British youths ____.

A)are trying to seek their fortune on the Continent

B)are indifferent to the unemployed on the Continent

C)have been the first to show their disappointment over joblessness

D)are sympathetic to the unemployed in France and Belgium

4.The author states all the items listed except ____.

A)European youths are worried about a new world war in the future

B)Widespread unemployment is beyond European youths’ expectation

C)the rock song “No Future” is an expression of the disappointment of European youth

D)about 40% of the guest workers are out of work in Western Europe now

5.It seems that young Europeans ____.

A)are more like Americans than their elders in their way of thinking

B)look on life as their elders do

C)look more like Americans than their elders do

D)expect more from Americans than from their elders

          答案與解析:

1.D)roughly 0.6 million people. 參考原文第一句They are among the 250,000 people under the age of 25 who are out of work in the Netherlands, a group that accounts for 40 percent of the nation’s

          unemployed. 250,000≈D×40%

2.C) the students can’t get work after graduation. 原文是We study for jobs that don’t exist, 目的很明確, 是為了工作, 所以BD皆錯;A本文未有提及.

3.C) have been the first to show their disappointment over joblessness. 對應原文The bitter disappointment long expressed by British youths is spreading across the Continent.

4.D) about 40% of the guest workers are out of work in Western Europe now. 如果第一題做對了, 就知道40%不是the guest workers而是the nation’s unemployed. 其他三個選項皆可對應原文.

5.A) are more like Americans than their elders in their way of thinking. 對應原文Young Europeans, brought up in an extended period of economic success and general stability, seem to resemble Americans more than they do their own parents. Material enjoyment has given them a sense of

expectation, each the right, to a standard of living that they see aroundthem.

          英語四級閱讀理解練習題 3

When blood is sent to the lungs by the heart, it has come back from the cells in the rest of the body. So the blood that goes into the wall of an air sac (Jl) contains much dissolved carbon dioxide but very little oxygen. At the same time, the air that goes into the air sac contains much oxygen but very little carbon dioxide.

You have learned that dissolved materials always diffuse (擴散) from where there is more of them to where there is less. Oxygen from the air dissolves in the moisture on the lining of the air sac and diffuses through the lining into the blood. Meanwhile, carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the air sac. The blood then flows from the lungs back to the heart, which sends it out to all other parts of the body.

Soon after air goes into an air sac, it gives up some of its oxygen and takes in some carbon dioxide from the blood. To keep diffusion going as it should, this carbon dioxide must be gotten rid of. Breathing, which is caused by movements of the chest, forces the used air out of the air sacs in your lungs and brings in fresh air. The breathing muscles are controlled automatically so that you breathe at the proper rate to keep your air sacs supplied with fresh air.

Ordinarily, you breathe about twenty-two times a minute. Of course, you breathe faster when you are exercising and slower when you are resting. Fresh air is brought into your lungs when you breathe in, or inhale, while used air is forced out of your lungs when you breathe out, or exhale.

          1. In the respiratory process, only one of the following actions takes place: it is_______.

          A. the diffusion of blood through capillary walls into air sacs

          B. the diffusion of carbon dioxide through capillary and air sac walls into the blood

          C. the diffusion of oxygen through the air sac and capillary walls into the blood

          D. the exchange of nitrogen within air sacs

          2. The number of times per minute that you breathe is_______.

          A. independent of your rate of exercise

          B. fixed at twenty-two times per minute

          C. influenced by your age and sex

          D. controlled automatically by an unspecified body mechanism

          3. The process by which carbon dioxide and oxygen are transferred does not depend on _________.

          A. the presence of nitrogen in the blood

          B. breathing muscles

          C. the flow of blood

          D. the moisture in the air sac linings

          4. The authors style in this passage can best be described as---------.

A informal and matter of fact

          B. impersonal

          C. personal P- matter of fact and formal

          5. Which of the following words can replace the word "exhale"?

          A. Breathe out.

          B. Breathe in.
