suggest 是個及物動詞，后面可以跟名詞、代詞、動詞 -ing 形式或從句作它的賓語。各種試題對 suggest 的考查通常涉及到它的非謂語動詞形式、賓語從句及賓語從句的虛擬語氣等方面。下面就結合歷年高考試題，對 suggest 的用法作一小結。
考點一、 suggest 作“間接表明;建議;使想起”解時，后面可以跟名詞、代詞或動詞 -ing 形式作賓語。例如：
① That girls sun-tanned face suggests excellent health. 那個姑娘被太陽曬黑了的臉表明她身體非常健康。
② Mr. Smith suggested a way out of the difficulty. 史密斯先生提出了一個克服困難的辦法。
③ An explanation suddenly suggested itself to me. 一種解釋突然出現在我的腦海里。
④ I have written him a letter and suggested his sending it to the Ministry of Culture. 我給他寫了一封信，并建議他把它寄給文化部。
suggest 后面可以跟“ to sb to do sth ”結構。其中的介詞 to 不能省略。動詞不定式短語 to do sth 作賓語補足語。例如：
⑤ Who suggested to you to do it this way? 誰提出要你這樣做的?
考點二、 suggest 作“建議”解，而且后面跟 that 從句作賓語時，賓語從句中的謂語動詞用虛擬語氣，即謂語動詞用“( should )動詞原形”。例如：
① Almost all his friends suggested that he visit Mr. Johnson at once.
② —— The experiment has failed!
---- I suggest you try again.
考點三、 suggest 作“表明、說明、暗示、指出”解，而且后面跟 that 從句作賓語時，賓語從句中的謂語動詞用陳述語氣。例如：
① He often came to the theater， but his attitude suggested he was not really interested in the play.
② Janes pale face suggested that she was ill， and her parents suggested that she have a medical examination.
例②中第一個 suggested 作“表明、說明”解，所以其后的賓語從句的謂語動詞用陳述語氣;第二個 suggested 的意思是“建議”，所以其后的賓語從句的謂語動詞用虛擬語氣，其中的 should 被省略了。
考點四、在下列含 suggest 的句式中，如果 suggest 表示“建議”時，其后的賓語從句的謂語動詞仍然用虛擬語氣。
句式一、 Its suggested that…… (有人建議……)例如：
① Its suggested that we ( should ) put on a short play at the party. 有人建議我們在晚會上演一個短劇。
② It has been suggested that Robert should go to Chicago and try to find a job there. 有人建議羅伯特到芝加哥去，設法在那里找個工作。
句式二、 What ( All that ) sb. suggests is that…… (某人建議的是……)例如：
① What I suggest is that we visit a class right away. 我的建議是我們馬上去聽課。
② What she suggested was that the clinic should make better use of those herbs. 她建議醫療站更好地利用那些草藥。
考點五、名詞 suggestion 的用法。
suggestion 作“建議”解，后面跟同位語從句時，以及 suggestion 用作主語，后面跟表語從句時，從句中的謂語動詞均用虛擬語氣。例如：
① My suggestion is that the work should be started at once. 我的建議是立即動工。
② The monitors suggestion that she should come another day has not been accepted. 班長提出的她改天來的建議還是沒有被接受。

suggest的用法及使用錯點
錯點一 誤用不定式作賓語
要表示漢語的“建議做某事”，英語通常用 suggest doing sth，而不能用 suggest to do sth。如：
他建議坐飛機去，可我認為這樣花費太大。
正：He suggested going by plane, but I thought it would cost too much.
誤：He suggested to go by plane, but I thought it would cost too much.
湯姆建議把房子賣了，但是安表示反對。
正：Tom suggested selling the house but Ann was against it.
正：Tom suggested to sell the house but Ann was against it.
錯點二 誤接不定式的復合結構作賓語
漢語通常說“建議某人做某事”，但英語習慣上不能說 suggest sb to do sth，而說suggest sb’s [sb]doing sth。也就是說，suggest 后不僅不接不定式，而且也不接不定式的復合結構。如：
他建議我們早點動身。
正：He suggested that we leave earlier.
誤：He suggested us to leave earlier.
當然，我們也可以用后接 that 從句的形式來表達此意思(注意謂語用 “should+動詞原形”這樣的虛擬語氣形式)。如：
I suggest that we (should) have lunch right now. 我建議我們現在就吃午飯。
He suggests that we should all go to see the film. 他建議我們都去看電影。
比較以下同義表達：
他建議他們在沒有聽到事實真相之前什么都別說。
正：He suggested (should) not saying anything till they heard the facts.
正：He suggested saying nothing about it till they heard the facts.
正：He suggested that they shouldn’t say anything till they heard the facts.
錯點三 混用其后賓語從句的語氣
suggest 后接賓語從句時，從謂語既可用陳述語氣，也可用虛擬語氣，其區別與 suggest所表示的意思有關：
1. 若suggest 表示“建議”，則其后接的 that 從句謂語通常用“(should)+動詞原形”這樣的虛擬語氣形式。如：
I suggested that she should go home. 我建議她回家去。
She suggested that I (should) be the leader. 她提議由我來做領導人。
2. 若suggest 表示“暗示”“意指”“表明”等義，則其后接的 that 從句要用陳述語氣。如：
What he said suggested that he was a cheat. 他說的話表明他是個騙子。
Are you suggesting that I’m not suited for the job? 你的意思是說我不適合做這工作?
錯點四 其后誤接雙賓語
要表示向某人提出某情況，suggest后不能接雙賓語，即不能用suggest sb sth，而通常用 suggest sth to sb。如：
我向她提出一個解決問題的辦法。
正：I suggested a way out to her.
誤：I suggested her a way out.
若其中的直接賓語比較復雜(比如是that 從句)時，可考慮改用 suggest to sb sth。如：
我向他建議我們應該用另一種方式處理這個問題。
正：I suggested to him that we should tackle the problem another way.
誤：I suggested him that we should tackle the problem another way.
錯點五 忽略相關派生名詞的相關用法
按英語習慣，suggest的派生名詞suggestion也具有與其詞根動詞相似的用法，如當suggestion表示“建議”時，若其后接一個that引導的賓語從句，則該從句也習慣上要用“should+動詞原形”這樣的虛擬語氣。如：
The suggestion that shops should open on Sundays led to a heated discussion. 關于商店星期日也應該營業的提議，引起了激烈的爭論。
There was a suggestion that Brown should be dropped from the team. 有一項建議是布朗應該離隊。
